AGROFORESTEAM is an international project that aims to transform Mediterranean agriculture by promoting territorially adapted agroforestry systems. At its core is the development of Multi-Actor Platforms (MAPs), collaborative spaces that bring together farmers, researchers, policymakers, businesses, associations, and other local actors. These platforms facilitate the integration of scientific and practical knowledge, identify barriers and opportunities, and co-design agroforestry solutions tailored to each region’s specific needs. MAPs foster dialogue, mutual learning, and innovation, and serve as tools for community empowerment. MAPs actively promote the participation of women and includes the gender perspective in the transition toward more sustainable, resilient, and equitable farming systems. By placing MAPs at the heart of its strategy, AGROFORESTEAM find that its actions are grounded in territorial realities and collective intelligence. This approach is operationalized through a series of interconnected Work Packages, each addressing key dimensions of agroforestry transformation across the Mediterranean. AGROFORESTEAM will document traditional and innovative techniques, co-design agroforestry systems, monitor agronomic, environmental and economic performances of already on-going case studies and elaborate learning materials and capacity building activities.

Work Packages of AGROFORESTEAM

AGROFORESTEAM is structured into 6 interconnected Work Packages (WPs), each addressing a key dimension of the project

WP1 – Contextualising Agroforestry Systems - Leader: University Mohamed Khider of Biskra

Provides a comprehensive overview of existing agroforestry practices, documents traditional and innovative techniques, and identifies technical, political, and socio-economic barriers to adoption.
Tasks:
•T1.1 Document traditional and innovative agroforestry practices through literature review, field visits, and interviews.
•T1.2 Characterize selected agroforestry case studies to promote through developed Multi-Actor Platforms (MAPs).
•T1.3 Identify technical, political, and socio-economic barriers to the adoption of the selected agroforestry systems through stakeholder engagement and policy analysis.

WP2 – Territorialised Multi-Actor Platforms – Leader: University of Évora

Develops and supports MAPs in each region, ensuring stakeholder engagement, empowerment, gender inclusion, and long-term sustainability of the platforms beyond the project.
Tasks:
•T2.1 Establish and support MAPs tailored to each region.
•T2.2 Facilitate participatory activities and stakeholder empowerment.
•T2.3 Monitor MAPs dynamics and develop sustainability roadmaps.
•T2.4 Integrate gender perspective in all MAPs activities.

WP3 – Co-designing and Monitoring Agroforestry Systems - Leader: Council for agricultural research and the economics

Supports the participatory design and scientific monitoring of agroforestry systems, evaluating soil health, biodiversity, and agronomic performance
Tasks:
•T3.1 Co-design agroforestry trials with MAPs stakeholders.
•T3.2 Monitor soil health, biodiversity, and agronomic performance.
•T3.3 Compare agroforestry systems with conventional practices.

WP4 – Economic and Climate Change Mitigation Potential – Leaders: University of León

Assesses the economic viability and environmental impact of agroforestry systems, including water, energy, food, and emissions (WEFE nexus) analysis.
Tasks:
•T4.1 Collect economic and environmental data from case studies.
•T4.2 Assess cost-benefit and business models of agroforestry systems.
•T4.3 Analyse the WEFE nexus (Water, Energy, Food, Emissions) and eco-efficiency.

WP5 – Outreach Activities and Communication – Leader: Universitat de Barcelona

Coordinates dissemination, capacity building, and knowledge-sharing activities, ensuring inclusive and gender-sensitive learning materials and stakeholder engagement.
Tasks:
•T5.1 Develop a strategic communication and dissemination plan.
•T5.2 Create visual identity and website.
•T5.3 Produce learning materials, videos, brochures, and organize training events.
•T5.4 Promote gender-sensitive and inclusive outreach.

WP6 – Project Coordination and Management – Leader: Universitat de Barcelona

Ensures efficient administration, ethical compliance, data management, and overall coordination of the project.
Tasks:
•T6.1 Ensure administrative, financial, and ethical compliance.
•T6.2 Coordinate internal communication and reporting.
•T6.3 Manage data and risks, and monitor project progress.
